A Lacquer Writing Box ( Suzuribako ) Showa Period (20th century) Designed overall with Nunobiki Waterfall in spring, the cover with the cascade in silver and gold lacquer in low relief, a curving cherry tree on a cliff to the right in gold takamaki-e with kirigane and uchikomi details and with blossoms of inlaid mother-of-pearl painted with gold-lacquer pistils, falling petals of inlaid mother-of-pearl, foaming and cresting water at the base of the cascade of gold takamaki-e , rocks of higher-relief gold takamaki-e covered with kirigane and with uchikomi hollows, and the two Chinese characters for Nunobiki inlaid in mother-of-pearl and encorporated into the design ( ashi-de ), the left background of the lid roiro-nuri with gold togidashi above the water; the sides and underside of the cover matching with cherry boughs overhanging rocks and waves applied with mother-of-pearl petals and the background roiro-nuri with gold togidashi cloud bands; the lower interior of the writing box fitted with a removable tray containing an inkstone lacquered in fundame , a left compartment for paper or implements with flat cover decorated in togidashi and hiramaki-e cherry blossoms, a soft-metal waterdropper cast as a rock studded with silver and gilt cherry blossoms, signed on the silver base Ryoshin saku and fitted into a silver saucer, and a paper knife, paper pricker, and two brushes of gold lacquer cherry blossoms on a black lacquer ground and with silver mounts; undersides of inkstone, compartment, tray and base roiro and nashiji ; rims silver 11 x 10 x 2 3/8in. (28 x 25.3 x 5.8cm.) With wood inner box inscribed in gold lacquer Nunobiki no taki (Nunobiki Waterfall) and in gold lacquer on the underside of the lid that the writing box was presented by Prince Takamatsu to Mr. Ichioka Toshio; with black-lacquered wood outer box with matching inscription
