MGM, 1956. Designed by Walter Plunkett. Comprising a black wool 2-piece (sewn together in one spot) long-sleeved gown consisting of a small "V" neckline with 2 Elizabethan-style sleeve rolls, a boned bodice, and a lace-up back, with a heavy black wool skirt with a short black train, fastened with Velcro and snap closures, bearing an interior label inscribed, " Lana Turner / 1675 / 4416 ;" a black horsehair full-length crinoline with a boned waistband and a partially obscured interior label with only " Lan " in black ink visible, and a tag inscribed, " JWM24 / B103 / 6259B / Box MF 19 " in pencil; and a crinoline of black net and horsehair ruffles bearing an interior label inscribed, " Lana Turner / 1675 / 4405 " in black ink. Lacking cape. Walter Plunkett, best known as the costume designer for Gone With the Wind (1939), designed an extravagant wardrobe for Lana Turner in her role as "Diane de Poitiers," a tutor who becomes the mistress of the French king. This particular gown was screen-worn and also worn by Turner in many of the publicity photographs promoting the film. Accompanied by 3 vintage photographs of Turner wearing the gown.
