A large 19th century Martin Brothers stoneware bottle vase by Robert Wallace Martin decorated with four roundels depicting medieval faces above four linked reserves, each with birds amongst fruit trees, the upper and lower sections with applied beaded decoration and the attenuated neck with an overlapping leaf form pattern, standing on a stepped circular foot, 56 cm high, incised marks to base and dated 4-1876. (A/F) Provenance: Part of a single owner collection originally acquired directly from the Martin Brothers Pottery, by Samuel L. M. Avery Esq., a master builder and resident of Southall. Avery was a friend and acquaintance of the Martin family, often visiting the pottery where he bought pieces directly from them for his own collection. The collection was inherited by his descendants and has remained in the family ever since, only being recently discovered following the passing of his daughter. CONDITION REPORT The vase has been broken and repaired towards the base. Some surface wear throughout, but no other apparent damage.
