A large arch-topped miniature, on vellum, depicting Job on his dungheap, the whole surrounded by a full border of floral and acanthus sprays, partly on triangular and trapezoidal brushed gold grounds. On the verso, 24 lines of text from the opening of the Office of the Dead with an animated quarter-panel border and nine one-line initials in gold on blue, red or brown ground. Condition: very minimal spots or thumbsoiling to vellum, bright and fresh colors . an attractive and colorful miniature in fine condition. The nine lessons of Job are the most common miniature to accompany the Office of the Dead. Towards the late 15th century in France, images of this Old Testament hero became as popular as the funeral service and burial had been throughout the earlier history of the Book of Hours.
