A LARGE REPOUSSÉ SILVER AND COPPER-ALLOY COVERED RITUAL TEAPOTTibet, 19th century or later The generously proportioned globular silver body set with copper-alloy features, including a flared foot wrapped in repoussé petals, a handle in the form of a dragon with protruding eyes, whiskers and tusks issuing from the snout, and a scaled body terminating in a curled tail, the spout emerging from the head of a makara, the shoulder with a repoussé scroll band beneath an openwork 'scrolling lotus' neck, the domed silver cover mounted with a copper-alloy repoussé roundel in the form of a flowerhead beneath a bud-form finial. 17in (43.2cm) width over handle FootnotesTeapots of this type were traditionally used during special occasions such as weddings. Handles in the form of dragons and spouts issuing from the mouths of makaras commonly appear with stylistic variations across the Tibetan region.
