A late 19th century gem set insect brooch, with pearl set thorax and wings, pear-cut sapphire abdomen and cabochon ruby eyes, on plain ‘safety pin’ bar brooch, mounted in yellow gold, with unassociated case, pearls untested for origin, brooch length 34mm. £200-240 Condition Report The sapphire is a lightish blue with some zoning visible and some wear. The pearls are all slightly irregular, but fairly well matched. The cabochon ruby eyes are quite light pink. The bar brooch is slightly bent/kinked and the yellow gold is unmarked and untested. The gilt tooled brown leather case is unassociated; it has cream velvet and silk interior and is signed ‘Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company Ltd’; it is in good condition.
