Title: A letter copybook from the San Francisco Post Office dispatch agent's office Author: Cooper, W. A. Place: [San Francisco] Publisher: Date: 1895-1898 Description: Contains approximately 600 pages of copy letters (hand-written and typed) from San Francisco dispatch agent, W. A. Cooper, to various post offices, consulates, friends, and other agencies, around the world, from 1895 to 1898. 11¾x9¾, copy letters bound in half calf and cloth album. Fascinating archive containing original copy letters from San Francisco dispatch agent, W. A. Cooper, directing mail and information to various locations, including many California and United States cities, such as Honolulu, Hawaii, San Francisco, Washington DC, Japan and China. Many of the letters discuss Cooper's interest in stamp collecting and his many outdoor and angling adventures, including spots in California, such as: Klamath, Besswick, Marysville, Sisson, etc. In one letter Cooper is inquiring for information in the Klamath Lakes area for a two week vacation he and his friends were about to take: "We desire to have good fishing and catch some large trout, do you think Sissons camp or the McCloud River would be a good place to go?..."; another: "Madame: Three gentlemen friends and myself were thinking of going to Klamath Hot Springs on a fishing trip, leaving San Francisco on the 1st of June. We have heard from several parties that the prospects for good fishing there this season are poor owning to the fact that the fish ladder over the dam at Pokegama was washed away last winter and has not been repaired yet. Mr. John P. Babcock, Deputy Fish Commissioner, has spoken very highly of the Mcleload river in the vicinity of Sisson camp Horseshoe bend and gave me your address...". Other letters of correspondence pass information between sailing vessels and Washington DC. A letter to the Hon. Albert S. Willis, U.S. Minister in Honolulu, Hawaii states: "Sir: I have the honor to enclose herewith 2 telegrams for you which I have just received from the Department of State...Washington DC...W.A. Cooper, Dispatch Agent, SanFran Calif...Send the following...First Steamer 'Willis Minister Honolulu Secretary Gresham died quarter past one this morning...". Typed letter titled “Official business” addressed to the Secretary of State, Washington DC: “Steamer ‘Monowai’ which arrived this day brought no mail from Hawaii. The purser of the steamer brought me the following message which was called out to him by Consul General Mills. ‘Cholera broken out at Honolulu, about eight deaths among natives and Chinese. No alarm every precaution is being taken.” Also includes several letters on stamp collecting, stamp values, the current market trends for stamps and what to watch out for when selling and trading stamps. Lot Amendments Condition: Tearing to spine ends, corners bumped, discoloration spots and soiling to cloth; dampstaining affecting the final 150 pages, occasional light foxing, plus other light age wear; else very good overall.
