Consequently, the supply of these gemstones has always fallen short of demand. Historically, they have been mined in the Mogok Valley in the northern part of Burma which is approximately two miles long and a half a mile wide. The colour of the rubies stemming from these mines is often referred to as "pigeon's blood" and has long been considered the most desirous colour. The present ruby with its highly saturated colour is a superb example of the aforementioned colour. Whereas emeralds, sapphires and diamonds appear on the market in sizes more considerable than 15 carats, large rubies of Burmese origin are exceedingly rare.
