A New and Accurat Map of the World Drawne according to ye truest Descriptions latest Discoveries & best Observations yet have beene made by English or Strangers, 1651, the rare 3rd state, twin-hemisphere map of the World, showing California as an Island, decorative borders of allegorical figures representing Water, Earth, Fire and Air, celestial hemispheres, solar and lunar eclipses, and portraits of explorers, engraved map with hand-colouring, 400 x 520mm., English text on verso with woodcut initial of the second state by John Legatt, repaired split at foot of central vertical fold, the sheet lined with thin Japan tissue, narrow margins extended, [Shirley 317], Roger Rea, [c.1665]. *** The date in the title field was amended to 1651, as here, for the second state bearing the imprint of William Humble, who took over the plates of the Prospect from his father, George Humble. They were subsequently sold to William Garrett who resold them to the Rea brothers. Shirley describes Rea issues as 'uncommon' due to a large number of impressions being destroyed in the Great Fire.
