A pair of fossilized Irish elk antlers
Pleistocene period 251cm.; 99ins wide mounted on wooden back plate (restorations) Megaloceras Giganteus, is an extinct giant red deer species and is the largest deer species known. During the Pleistene era (1.6 million-10,000 years ago) its range extended throughout Europe, North Asia and North Africa. A closely related species is known from the Chinese fossil record. The species is termed |Irish| since the best preserved and largest specimens have been discovered in the peat bogs of Ireland often in the 18th and 19th Centuries by labourers whilst digging peat for fuel. The largest recorded antlers are 12 foot across Provenance: This pair of antlers were reputedly excavated from a peat bog in County Offaly, Ireland in the late 18th century.
