MARK OF MARTIN-GUILLAUME-BIENNAIS, PARIS, 1798-1809, PROBABLY AFTER A DESIGN BY PERCIER AND FONTAINE
A PAIR OF FRENCH EMPIRE SILVER-GILT FIVE-LIGHT CANDLEABRA FROM THE BORGHESE SERVICE MARK OF MARTIN-GUILLAUME-BIENNAIS, PARIS, 1798-1809, PROBABLY AFTER A DESIGN BY PERCIER AND FONTAINE Each on spreading base with anthemion border and a band of palmettes and foliage on a textured ground, the tapering stem applied with figures of Apollo holding a lyre and a laurel wreath and Victory holding a spear and shield applied with the Napoleonic eagle below an imperial crown, with four cornucopia branches, each with a detachable nozzle, and a central ovoid socket, the base applied with a coat-of-arms, marked on foot, stem, central socket and each nozzle, the base further engraved 'Biennais, Oréfevre de S. M t e s l'Empereur et Roi: a Paris' 21 in. (53.3 cm.) high 209 oz. (6,500 gr.) The arms are those of Borghese for Prince Camillo and Pauline Borghese. (2)
