A pair of French Regency revival giltwood salon chairs, circa 1870, leaf and scroll carved frames with upholstered backs and seats, the back seat rails bearing paper labels for Bertram and son h:101 w:64 cm Literature: William Bertram & Son was established in 1830 and traded from 100 Dean Street London from 1839. Similar to Edwards & Roberts they acted as retailers and cabinet makers, specialising in brass-inlaid and marquetry furniture. They saw the interest in French 18th century style furniture, selling pieces by makers such as Mellier & co as well as their own. Lot 817, a pair of French Regence revival giltwood salon chairs, circa 1870, is a fine example of this style of furniture. Bertram & Sons are known to have supplied pieces to Thoresby Hall, Nottinghamshire, which were sold by Sotheby's 31 May - 2 June 1989. Other known pieces are recorded in C.Gilbert and G. Beard in The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840 London, 1986, p.68. The business closed 1909. ,200 Some chips to the gilt gesso frames and wear to the arm terminals
