A PAIR OF GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLES with swamped octagonal sighted barrels rifled with seven grooves and struck at the breech with maker's mark ZB with a flowerhead, in a shaped punch, plain enclosed locks with flush-fitting cocks and struck with a mark on the tail, WS with crossed guns beneath (one top jaw finial missing), fruitwood full stocks each carved with a monster-head in relief on the fore-stock and inlaid with horn lines enclosing horn plaques engraved with animals, the background enriched with horn scrolls, pellets and stars, some panels pierced and carved in relief with scenes of the chase (minor pieces of inlay missing), opposite each lock a carved stag beset by hounds, on each cheek-piece a stag being weighed above the inscription 'Soli Deo Gloria', behind one barrel tang the date 1679 and the stockmaker's initials G.M., and behind the other the initials J.F.M(?), iron trigger-guards, set triggers (one adjusting screw missing), staghorn butt-plates each engraved with a coat-of-arms and the initials G.F v.
