A PAIR OF WILLIAM IV MAHOGANY GLOBES By William and Alexander Keith Johnston, Edinburgh The 18 in. Terrestial globe made up of two sets of twelve chromolithographed gores, the equatorial graduated in degrees running clockwise and counter-clockwise and also in hours and minutes, the ecliptic graduated in days and showing the symbols of the houses of the zodiac, Greenwich Meridian and equinoctial colure shown, the countries coloured and outlined, the oceans showing the currents, isothermals, telegraph lines and analemma equation (neat restorations to some areas), with brass meridian ring divided into four quadrants, brass hour ring graduated I-XII twice, mounted on the horizon ring, divided into four quadrants graduated in degrees and showing the names and symbols of the houses of the zodiac, the months and the days (horizon ring label supplied in facsimile), the meridian ring supported by two rollers in the horizon ring and one below, raised on three quadrant supports, mounted on the carved and turned pillar, the tripod legs with acanthus-leaf carving and paw feet The 18 inch celestial globe made up of two sets of twelve hand-coloured lithographed gores, the equatorial graduated in degrees and hours and minutes, the ecliptic graduated in days and showing the months, the solstitial and equinoctial colures shown, the constellations depicted pictorially in gold, the stars shown to six orders of magnitude (slight scuff and touching to celestial horizon ring, repair to old damage at celestial equator), with brass meridian ring divided into four quadrants, with engraved presentation inscription to 'WILLIAM HENRY PEARSON ... JULY THIRTY-FIRST 1922', brass hour ring graduated I-XII twice, mounted on the hand coloured ligthographed horizon ring, divided into four quadrants graduated in degrees and showing the names and symbols of the houses of the zodiac, the months and the days (wear to a few areas with loss of image, some restoration), the meridian ring supported by two rollers in horizon ring and one below, raised on three quadrant supports, mounted on a carved and turned pillar, the tripod legs with acanthus-leaf carving and paw feet Each globe: 45½ in. high (2)
