With Copious Observations and Directions Author: "An Amateur" Place: Bath Publisher: Printed by W. Meyler Date: [1806] Description: 59, [1 errata], 4 pp. Three engraved folding plates at rear. (8vo) 20.8x13 cm (8¼x5¼"), early half calf and marbled boards, modern calf rebacking. A very rare scientific treatise on the game of billiards, perhaps the first such in the English language. Contains vocabulary of the game, descriptions of the implements of play, the effects of spin and the role of chance. The text is signed, in type, at the close "Philobill". COPAC locates a single copy with the Bath imprint at Oxford University; OCLC WorldCat and the ESTC locate a copy at Cornell University with a London imprint. The original publisher's imprint on the title page of this copy has been erased and, in a contemporary hand, the name and address of the London publisher has been written in, along with the price for a stitched copy. No copies appear in book auction records for at least 30 years. Lot Amendments Condition: Boards a bit worn; light foxing and browning within; very good or better. Item number: 233239
