A RARE ART NOUVEAU DEMANTOID GARNET, COLOURED DIAMOND AND ENAMEL BROOCH, BY TIFFANY Set with an oval-cut demantoid garnet weighing approximately 9.25 carats, a cushion-shaped fancy to fancy deep brown orange diamond, old mine-cut light blue and fancy light to fancy pink diamond to the centre of the stylised openwork shield-shaped panel of light green enamel scroll design, with coloured diamond and demantoid garnet detail, mounted in gold, circa 1900, 5.0 cm high With certificate 8795651 dated 10/7/1996 from the Gemological Institute of America stating that the diamonds are fancy light to fancy pink and fancy to fancy deep brown-orange, natural colour Signed by Tiffany & Co. Color, harmony of design, superb gemstones and excellent craftsmanship combine to make this brooch a work of art. By juxtaposing enamel, colored diamonds and an unusually large demantoid garnet, Tiffany & Co. have created a jewel fit for royalty. The triangular shape of this brooch is reminescent of a style of jewelry known as a stomacher, a bodice ornament that was popular in the 18Th century and sustained a revival during the Edwardian period. Jewelry in this form was exhibited by Tiffany & Co. in their display at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900. The foremost feature of this brooch is an exquisite demantoid garnet that weighs approximately 9.28 carats. Usually found in sizes of less than a carat, larger stones are exceedingly rare. They were popular during the last two decades of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries, mostly used as accents on imaginative animal and insect jewelry. During the time period when this brooch was created, Tiffany made jewelry with a large, important gemstone set within an artful composition. On this brooch, smaller yet substantial stones complement the subtle enameling, enhancing the total design. It is extremely rare to find a jewel of this caliber that is still in its original mounting. This piece is worthy of a museum. Janet Zapata, Jewelry Historian
