REMINGTON & SONS, ILLION, N.Y./ELLIOT'S PATENT DEC. 12TH 1865 , New York scroll engraved frame and barrel breeches, nickel plated finish, varnished oak grips, inscribed along backstrap Jas. C. Fargo/No. 56 Park Ave. New York/from C.G.C. Jany. 1st 1875 , original leather case, lined with green felt, oak cartridge block with 18 cartridges, inside of lid gilt stamped J.B. Crook & Co./Guns & Pistols/ (address indiscernable) 3 inch (8.9 cm) barrels Slight wear to barrels on right side, case with minor wear to some edges. Together with a copy of the Arms Gazette , Volume 1, Number 10, June 1974 and The Gun Report , September 1975, in which this pistol is featured in an advertisements of Arnold Marcus Chernoff and a hand-written note by Gaines de Graffenried discussing a trade of a cased Colt 1851 Navy for it. James C. Fargo, brother of William G. Fargo, one of the founder's of Wells, Fargo & Co. James later served as a company director, and was also president of the American Express Co. He came to New York City in 1866 holding the position of company general superintendant and manager. He became president in 1881, and was also president of the Merchants Dispatch Transportation Company, and a director of several other railway and express corporations. New York City directories for the years 1872-1877 list James C. Fargo as living at 56 Park Avenue, with offices at 113 and 115 Broadway. William G. Fargo is listed as living in Buffalo, NY, with multiple office addresses throughout lower Manhattan.
