A Rare Cased Irish 54-Bore Flintlock Travelling Pistol, And An 18-Bore Flintlock Officer's Pistol, Both With Spring Bayonet By John Rigby Dublin, Early 19th CenturyThe first with rebrowned twist sighted barrel engraved 'DUBLIN' in the sighting groove and with folding bayonet on the left side, grooved case-hardened tang engraved with foliage, signed case-hardened flat bevelled lock decorated with foliage, 'French' cock en suite, blued safety-catch, semi-rainproof pan and roller on a blued spring, figured full stock with chequered rounded butt and border engraved silver butt-cap, blued trigger-guard with pineapple finial and decorated with foliage on the border engraved bow, vacant silver escutcheon, stirrup ramrod, and some original finish; the second with rebrowned twist sighted barrel engraved 'DUBLIN' along the top flat and fitted with folding bayonet on the left side, case-hardened tang and signed flat bevelled lock similar to the last, figured three-quarter stock with flattened chequered butt (minor old split on one side), plain brass mounts comprising slightly spurred pommel-cap, trigger-guard with pineapple-shaped finial, fore-end cap, stirrup ramrod, and some original finish: in original lined and fitted mahogany case with some accessories including Dixon & Sons brass-mounted three-way powder-flask, the interior of the lid with maker's illustrated trade label of circa 1815, the exterior (minor old splits) with circular vacant brass escutcheon centred on a flush-fitting circular brass carrying handle 18.2 cm. and 10.2 cm. barrels FootnotesProvenance Thomas Del Mar Ltd In association with Sotheby's, Arms & Armour & Militaria, 14 December 2005, lot 183
