Heavy 27 1/2 inch octagonal barrel with seven groove rifling in .55 caliber. Iron blade fore-sight and open rear sight. Top flat marked J & S. Hawken St. Louis. Additional filled dovetail in front of rear sight. Left flat with series of 19 small diamond-shaped stamps. Breech and barrel tang engraved with foliage. Lock engraved with game bird and marked Wolf & Bishop/Warranted. Double-set triggers. Scrolling iron triggerguard engraved with foliage. Iron patchbox hinged on the lower edge and engraved with foliage and figure of a buffalo pawing the ground. Walnut half-stock with low cheekpiece, iron fore-end cap and iron wedge escutcheons. Condition: Very good. Barrel with grey/brown patina showing sharp markings, scattered minor marks and shortened during period of use. Breech and lock with dark grey patina. Fine wood. See Illustration
