A rare gold, hardstone, mother of pearl, burgau shell and ivory presentation snuff box, Paris, 1745,rectangular, the panels applied with carved mother of pearland burgau shell reliefs of water dogs startling or attacking ducks or swans, after Jean-Baptiste Oudry within cattails,reeds and other fauna on a partially resinous ground, among chinoiserie rockery and shrubs, all sides but one further inlaid in fine bands of shimmering dark green burgau shellresembling water, the left side applied with a carved amberhare within shrubs, all on a polished gold ground, the gold cagework mounts chased with scrolls, protruding scroll work thumb piece, wavy inner rims, levelled gold footrim, the interior of the lid set with a contemporary oval miniature of Frederick II, King of Prussia, in profile to sinister and wearing uniform including the Order of the Black Eagle, painted on ivory, attributed to Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki (1726–1801),the lining with traces of marks including rubbed maker’s mark and the charge mark of Antoine Leschaudel (1744-1750),the mounts with Paris date letter for 1745 and two later illegible marks,in a modern silk-lined leather case,
