Katalognummer: CA0919-311 A REALGAR GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE China, 18th-19th century. The bottle is of slightly flattened, ovoid form with a deep orange tone accented by brilliant splashes of ochre and yellow. Recessed base with oval foot rim. Very nice surface polish. Provenance: From a Hungarian private collection. Condition: Excellent condition with only minor wear and traces of use, mostly to mouth and lip. Stopper: Ruby-red glass with metal mounting Weight: 49.6 grams including stopper Dimensions: Height including stopper 66 mm. Diameter neck 18 mm and mouth 7 mm. ‘Realgar’ glass is assumed to have been developed at the Imperial glassworks during the Kangxi period (1662-1722), when production was under the directorship of Kilian Stumpf and his fellow Jesuits, who set up the glassworks for the Emperor in 1696. Plain ‘realgar’ glass snuff bottles were made in significant numbers throughout the 18th century and a proportion of them were apparently produced at the court to be distributed as gifts.
