A SET OF EIGHT GEORGE II III NEEDLEWORK-COVERED MAHOGANY CHAIRS PROBABLY SUPPLIED UNDER THE DIRECTION OF JAMES PAINE CIRCA 1755-1765 Comprising six side chairs and two open armchairs, each with cartouche-shaped padded back and serpentine padded seat covered in original polychrome chenille needlework, with gilt-brass close-nailing, on cabriole legs carved with confronted C-scroll cartouches surrounded by rockwork issuing palms, on leaf-carved feet centred by cartouches, the specimen armchair with additional carved refinements, with ash seat-rails, the needlework restored by Texterity The armchairs: 43 in. (109 cm.) high; 30¾ in. (78 cm.) wide; 28¼ in. (72 cm.) deep The side chairs: 40 in. (101 cm.) high; 25¼ in. (64 cm.) wide; 26¼ in. (66.5 cm.) deep (8)
