each one a subject of Japanese Topography or culture, including: [a] The torii gate at Miyajima [Itsuku-shima] in Western Honshu [b] Purple Iris at Kabota, near Omori [c] Wistaria at Kameido Park in Tokyo [d]Sakura viewing [hanami]at Ueno Park [e]The avenue of 'noble cryptomerias' at Nikko [f]Fishing Boats near Yokohama [g]Pine covered islands at Matsushima bay in Northern Honshu [h]The Sumiyoshi Temple garden at Osaka [i]Count Okuma's home in Tokyo [Presumably the residence of Okuma Shigenobu, a Samurai of the Saga Clan from Hizen Province, enobled by the Meiji Restoration. Shigenobu's appointment as State Councillor saw the establishment of Japan's Parliamentary system and Legislative Assembly]. [j]Rice Fields in the crater of Mount Aso in Kyushu [In 1884 Mount Aso erupted, propelling large quantities of black ash and dust as far as Kumamoto where for three days it was so dark that artificial light was used in the day time.] [k]The Himeji at Nagoya in Central Honshu [originally built by Ieyasu for one of his sons in 1612, this castle was destroyed during the Pacific War. The present building dates from 1959]. The set contained in their original 'Underwood Travel Library' Case, together with a similar set of 50 stereographs depicting 'Burma Through The Stereoscope' and an Underwood/New York/USA patent/1901 stereoscope, all circa 1905 [each stereograph 7 x 3.5 inches/18 x 8cm./73 in the lot]
