A thangka depicting a mandala of the dhyani Buddha Amitayus surrounded by the four other dhyani Buddhas. Tibet, 18th century, 37x34.5cm 西藏 十八世纪 阿弥陀唐卡 The red-skinned Amitayus seated at centre of the mandala on a lotus base holding an amrita jar in his lap, surrounded by eight further emanations depicted on petals of a circular foliate lotus blossom within a square palace flanked with pairs of ceremonial umbrellas on either side, bordered by a ring of lotus petals, vajras and an outer multi-coloured ring, above various ritual items, with the four other dhyani Buddhas in each corner of the composition, identified by their relative mudras (Vairocana- dharmachakra mudra, Amoghasiddhi- abhaya mudra, Akshobya- bhumisparsha mudra, Ratnasambhava- varada mudra) Provenance: Illustrated in Helmut Uhlig, Das Bild des Buddha, Berlin, 1979, p. 191, cat. no. 115.
