The woodcut diagrams in this work comprise Thomas Bewick’s first illustrating assignment. Bewick was an apprentice when he took on the job of illustrating the book, which would help him perfect his technique at wood engraving, the first step in a long and distinguished career as a book illustrator. The book is signed by C. Pope and Samuel B. Pope, and there is an inscription on the first page of subscribers, dated 1928, that states “This book is undoubtedly belonged to Christopher Pope of Bristol, who built the blast furnace in Tynycoitre Machen…” There are a few ink corrections to the text in an early hand.
