W.C. Fields started out in vaudeville as a juggler and comedian and conquered Hollywood by developing a reputation for being an alcoholic who disliked children. Unfortunately, his comedic genius was undermined by these characteristics (which were likely exaggerated), even though he was a success in both film and radio. His popular films at Paramount couldn't save his contract with the studio; they dropped him after alcohol caused problems during the filming of Poppy (1936) and The Big Broadcast of 1938 (1938). He went on to star in a few more films, most notably in a partnership with Mae West, but his career declined and he died in 1946, two years after the release of his last film.
