A woollen marriage shawl of Bishnoi (or Vishnoi) people living in villages near Jodhpur, c. 1900, probably madder dyed and embroidered in white, blue and yellow cotton and Holbein, with geometric motifs, goddess figures with raised arms in ætempleÆ, against the evil eye, and peacocks which run wild in the region (The Bishnoi protect all wildlife around them), 127cm x 184cm, (In-186). æWhen I saw this in a shop in Jodhpur I recognized it immediately but at first could not place it. I had a jacket made out of an old one by Dorothy Reglar. Bought at Maharani, Jodhpur, 2003.
