Letter written to Secretary of War, Hon. Simon Cameron, Newark, NJ. Aug. 26, 1861, signed by H.N. Congas(?). The writer discusses Mr. James A. Hedden of Newark, NJ, who desires a Second Lieutenancy in the Marine Corps of the U.S. Navy. An endorsement with an illegible signature written below the letter reads: Respy referred to the Secretary of the Navy - the young man is worthy. Endorsed by Lincoln on verso as follows: Respectfully submitted to the Sec. of the Navy./ A. Lincoln/ Aug. 29, 1861. The Civil War Database lists a James A. Heddon who enlisted in New York City in October 1861 as a private, mustering into Co. B of the New York Marine Light Artillery. He was discharged November of 1862. The First Marine Artillery was raised for service on gunboats, and it served at Annapolis, MD and in North Carolina, attached to the 18th and 10th Corps, with portions of it taking part in the following engagements: Roanoke island, Elizabeth City, New Berne, Elizabeth, siege of Fort Macon, South Mills, Tranter's creek, Swift creek, Neuse river Washington, near Shiloh, Rawle's mills, expedition to Goldsboro Kinston and Folly Island.
