The elaborate print depicts the March 4, 1865 Grand Reception in the ballroom of the White House. It was a public reception held to herald the President’s inauguration with reportedly over 6,000 people in attendance. Here we see the President and First Lady greeting future Mrs. Grant as General Grant stands nearby. Vice President Andrew Johnson stands at the president’s side and several other notable figures are visible in the crowd including General William Tecumseh Sherman, General Winfield Scott, Salmon P. Chase, Edwin M. Stanton, and many others. The artist expertly captures the grandiose interior as well as the elaborate clothing worn to the event, especially by the ladies. Originally published in Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, this print is a reproduction that was sold as a premium bonus for purchasing family magazine, Frank Leslie’s Chimney Corner. A notice printed in the corner reads "Every Person who pays Ten Cents each for numbers 1 and 2 of Frank Leslie's Chimney Corner, The New Family Paper, is entitled to a copy of this PLATE without extra charge" or individuals could purchase the print for $3. The plate notes that it was copyrighted in 1865 by Frank Leslie, and the caption further includes a dedication to Mrs. Lincoln. Provenance:The Mr. & Mrs. Jack L.
