Extra illustrated with two original watercolours by Pugin, one of the Westminster School Room (following p. 22, shown above), the other of a Dormitory at Westminster School (following p. 24). Contemporary red half morocco, marbled boards, top edges gilt (rebacked preserving original spine); red cloth slipcase. Provenance : William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898; bookplate) -- Frederick Glyn, 4th Baron Wolverton (1864-1932; bookplate) -- Arthur Pforzheimer. (acquired from him in 1944). Provenance of the watercolours: John Pierpont 'J.P.' Morgan (1837-1913; pencilled note on each mount). LARGE-PAPER COPY WITH TWO ORIGINAL WATERCOLOURS BY AUGUSTUS PUGIN AND SUPERLATIVE PROVENANCE . First state of pl. 23 (the masters bareheaded), second state of pl. 26 (with printed title overslip and depicting washerwomen). Watermarked 1811-1816. The two watercolours of Westminster school mark the high point of Pugin’s skill as an architectural draftsman. He had already worked with Ackermann on several magnificently illustrated works, most of which are in the Spitz collection. The Microcosm of London , published between 1808 and 1810, was followed by the History of Westminster Abbey (1812), the History of the University of Oxford (1814), with thirty plates after Pugin, the History of the University of Cambridge , with twenty-two plates after him, and finally the present work, with fourteen of his plates.
