JOHN QUINCY ADAMS'S INAUGURAL ADDRESS. The contentious campaign of 1824 turned on sectional rivalries and pitted the dour New Englander Adams against southerners William Crawford Henry Clay and Andrew Jackson Because none of the four received a majority, the election was decided in the House. When Clay threw his support to Adams, ensuring his election, and was later named Secretary of State, Jackson cried foul and accused both men of a secret "corrupt bargain." In his Inaugural, Adams attempted to patch up some of the dissensions made evident in the campaign, recognizing "the peculiar circumstances of the recent election," and promising strict adherence to constitutional principles. This broadside is probably the first newspaper printing, issued by Washington's quasi-official National Intelligencer .
