Beschreibung:

ADORATION OF THE MAGI, miniature from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, [Germany, 17th century] 171 x 236mm. A large and accomplished miniature, possibly from a prayerbook, but may also have been from a single-sheet miniature, such as those copied from Old Masters for Rudolf II in Prague by the imperial illuminator Daniel Fröchl (1563-1613). The composition of this particular scene -- the tilted head of the Virgin, St Joseph holding an apple, the ox and mule half-hidden in the stable -- closely resembles that of Albrecht Dürer's own Adoration Of The Magi , a woodcut executed in c.1503 for The Life of the Virgin (cf. Meder 199f). The palette, with its muted yellow and white tones and striking blues, is reminiscent of Giovanni Battista Castello (see Walters Art Gallery W.498), but the style is markedly more Germanic.
