ADVENTURES INTO TERROR Nos. 20, 21 and 22 * Lot of Three Comic Books Publisher: Atlas [Indicia: Current Detective Stories, Inc.] Date Published: June-August 1953 Description: #20: VG- (3.5). Spine stress, reading creases to spine, bottom staple slightly pulled, corner creases, a few faint creases to top edge of front cover, sun shadows to edges of back cover. Off-white pages. GPAnalysis: A 4.0 sold for $216 in 10/22. #21: G/VG (3.0). Spine stress, 1/4" split top spine, creasing to corners and top edge of front cover, creases and a few short tears to back cover, top corner of back cover rubbed, reseller's price pencilled to back cover ("2.00"), confetti-like cuts to open edge of some rear pages (bindery flaw?). Off-white pages. If not for cuts to page edges, would be a solid 4.0. GPAnalysis: A 3.0 sold for $228 in 9/20. #22: Fine (6.0). Spine ticks, a few small rubs, tiny nicks and small creases, mild center reading crease. White to off-white pages. Clean and press to 6.5? GPAnalysis: A 6.0 sold for $180 in 7/19. Covers and art: Joe Maneely, Bill Everett, Carl Burgos, Harry Anderson, John Forte, Tony DiPreta, Cal Massey Dick Ayres, Gene Colan, Gil Kane Paul Reinman Bill Benulis, Chuck Winter. Bald brute backhands blonde; man impaled by spikes; rat beheaded in tiny guillotine. Pick of the litter is Paul Reinman’s “Son of a Freak” (ish #23), in which a two-headed circus freak named Moto wants to start a family. The only available bachelorettes are Beatrice the Bearded Lady, Rowa the Tiger Lady, Tillie the Fat Lady, and Weird Wanda, so picky Moto swipes right: “I’d rather die than marry one of those freaks! I want my child to be normal! And what chance would it have to be normal with one of those freaks for a mother?” Finally, Moto meets a two-headed lady and marries her, figuring that their matching mutations will somehow cancel themselves out. Sure enough, his baby is born with just one head. “One head… and TWO BODIES!” It’s a crazy story, straight up Nightmare Alley, full of the sort of psychosexual fear and loathing one seldom finds in an Atlas mag. We suspect that this story was loosely inspired by EC’s own fornicating-freaks fable, “Lower Berth,” published in Tales from the Crypt #33 (Dec. 1952). A limited edition of ten hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a few dozen softcovers. Fun reference, great keepsake, fully illustrated, chockablock with obscure facts, gags, bon mots. Softcovers are $40, deluxe hardcovers with dust jackets and limitation plates are $200. These books always go fast so don't delay. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com. Consignments welcome for PBA's Fall 2023 Comic Book sale. Top prices for Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age, Silver Age, original art and ephemera. Find out why PBA is the new fan-fave of funnybook fiends.
