Provenance: All presented to the late Sir John Boyd The pair of bookends are probably prototype models of the Rolls-Royce RB211 turbofan engine and were presented to Sir John at an apprentice prizegiving in 1970 at the National Gas Turbine Establishment at Pyestock, near Farnborough, Kent. Sir John started his career as an engineering worker and began work as a trade union organizer in 1946. He was President of the Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions in 1964 and was General Secretary of the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers from 1975 to 1982.
