AESCHYLUS (525-456 B.C.). Tragoediae VII , in Greek. Edited by Piero Vettori (1499-1585) and H. Estienne. [Geneva:] Henri Estienne, 1557. 4 (228 x 160mm). Estienne device [Schreiber 15] on title. (Occasional light spotting, very light browning, inscription washed from title.) 18th-century mottled calf with gilt armorial at centre of sides, gilt spine with red leather label, red edges (lightly rubbed, small wormholes at spine). Provenance : Claudius Expillius, 1600 (title inscription); ?Chanasse (title inscription); unidentified armorial with motto 'de non genero'; Demetrios Postolaka (stamp); Demosia Library stamp and cancellation. FIRST COMPLETE EDITION and the EDITIO PRINCEPS of Agamemnon 'the greatest Aeschylean tragedy, and one of the greatest masterpieces of Western dramatic literature' (Schreiber). It is printed with two sizes of Estienne's celebrated grecs du roi type. Adams A-265bis; Schreiber 145.
