ALBERT FLAMEN H.L. ROLFE, THOMAS ROWLANDSON (1756-1827) and others FISHING - Two albums of mounted prints, original watercolours and drawings. [Assembled c.1915]. 2 2 volumes. (490 x 355mm).499 prints, most hand-coloured engravings or aquatints, by Albert Flamen and others, and 41 original drawings in watercolour, wash, pen and ink or pencil by Thomas Rowlandson (4), H.L. Rolfe (2), W. Cruikshank (1), Howard Pyle (1), William Heath (10), Ernest Griset (1), Charles Keene (1), George D. Armour (1) and others. All mounted or mounted to size. Finely bound in early-19th-century-style green straight-grained half morocco gilt, old comb-marbled covers, spines in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with elaborate repeat decoration in gilt and blind built up using various rolls and small tools. A fine wide-ranging collection, interpreting the theme of Fish and Fishing in its widest context, the content often of humourous nature with a series titled "Sporting Characteristics 1834" from Henry Heath, 4 or possibly 5 drawings from Thomas Rowlandson and individual drawings from Ernest Griset, Charles Keene and George D. Armour. 'Genre' drawings include three fishing scenes, two by H.L. Rolfe, one by Howard Pyle The prints range from 17th-century etchings to plates by Fores from 1912, by way of Rowlandson and political caricatures of the Prince Regent and some of the finest aquatints, lithographs and hand-coloured engravings of the early to mid-19th century. They include a number of series of natural history prints of both sea and fresh-water fish, topographical views from Boydell's Thames , the Daniells' Voyage round Great Britain , Havell's Noblemen's & Gentlemen's Seats and 'genre subjects' with a fishing angle, humourous prints by Henry Alken Henry and William Heath John Leech's Mr. Briggs & his doings and political caricatures by Henry Bunbury, John Doyle Thomas Rowlandson and William Heath Rarities amongst the prints include Albert Flamen's Icones Diversorum Piscium tum maris tum amnium... ad vivum delineati [n.d. but ? 1664]. 5 of 6 parts only, etched general title, 5 section titles and 55 plates [Cf. Nissen ZBI 1393; Bartsch VI, 1-60]; and a broadside, printed by O. Ustonson, titled The angler's assistant being an epitomy of ye whole art of angling , [c.1770] [Westwood & Satchell p.xiii]. (2)
