ALBUM: An album of 162 original photographs of a naval tour of the North and East Africa and the East Indies. (Egypt, India, Kenya, Maldives, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Yemen, 1928-31). a single contemporary album, brown boards, bordered in blind, upper board lettered in white, overall 235 x 195m, comprising of 162 original black and white photographs pasted down to 9 leaves, many images titled by hand next to, or beneath photographs, all 51 x 76mm; Original photographs of a cruise of the H.M.S. Emerald, 1928 -1931. The tour visited several countries and cities, each location noted in handwritten captions: a large number of the photographs depict citizen's buildings, local people, streets scenes, markets, ports and temples, with examples of British rule in some areas, including the English church, Dar-es-Salaam and the Queen Victoria Memorial, Calcutta. These provide a stark contrast to the harrowing images of naval crew firing torpedoes from aboard the cruisers. Provenance: manuscript lists of the 'Cruise of H.M.S. Emerald, September 20, 1928 - January 5th 1931' to front pastedown, and of the 'Cruise of H.M.S. Delhi, 1st Cruise Squadron' to rear pastedown, both in a contemporary hand which matches the captions throughout the album. Both of these lists provide details of the dates and locations that each cruiser stopped on their tours.
