Hedemann, who came from Denmark in 1878 to manage the Hana Plantation, ended up spending the rest of his life in Hawaii. He photographed life on the plantation and in the Honolulu Iron works, and founded the Hawaiian Camera Club. His life and works are documented in A Photographer in the Kingdom, published by the Bishop Museum in 1988.
