Alciati, Andrea
Omnia emblemata cum commentariis; quibus emblematum detecta origine dubia omnia, et obscura illustrantur. Paris: Jean Richer for François Gueffier, 1618
A fine binding for Louis XIII, plausibly by the Ève bindery. The dating of the binding can be deduced from the armorial, which contains the arms of both France and Navarre; the crown of Navarre was merged with the French crown in 1620.
8vo (177 x 110 mm). Roman, italic and Greek types, 40 lines plus headline. collation: ā8-3 A-B4 ē8-1 î8 A-3Q8 R4: 528 leaves (a6-8 and e1 cancelled, replaced by A-B4). Engraved architectural title with inset portrait, numerous woodcut illustrations, ruled in red. (Slightly dampstained towards end.)
binding: Contemporary (before 1620) French red morocco (183 x 118 mm), frame composed of gilt fillets flanking a line of gilt dots, central gilt oval laurel wreath containing arms of Louis XIII [this exact armorial not found in Olivier 2493], flat spine gilt with same border around horizontal title, gilt edges, stubs from two pairs of fabric ties. (Binding slightly rubbed, spine and joints lightly creased.)
provenance: Louis XIII of France (r. 1610-1643), arms on binding, and shelfmark (probably) of the Bibliothèque royale, Y319/972 — Congrégation de la doctrine chrétienne, Paris, inscription "Ex Bibliothecae domus Sti. Caroli Parisiensis" at head of title-page — Archibald Acheson, 3rd Earl of Gosford (1806-1864), his library sold by his son in 1878 to — James Toovey (bookseller, 1813-1893), bookplate with motto "Inter folia fructus", sale of the Gosford French books, Paris, Porquet, 1 May 1882, lot 289, 295 francs, to Belin — Marie Poullier-Ketele, sale, Brussels, 15 May 1924, lot 112 — Cortland F.
