Omaha was the eastern terminus of the Union Pacific Railroad, and when Gardner took this image, was already a boomtown filled with bars, gambling houses and brothels. With the completion of the railroad in 1869, Omaha was poised to assume the position it holds today as Nebraska's largest city.
