Lot of 5, each on yellow square corner mounts with Gardner's imprinted 1862 copyright line on recto and applied printed labels from Gardner's Photographic Incidents of the War series on verso, including: No. 551/A Contrast. Federal Buried; Confederate Unburied, Where They Fell On The Battle Field Of Antietam; No. 561/Burying The Dead After The Battle of Antietam; No. 562/View Near Tunker Church On The Battle Field Of Antietam; No. 566/Confederate Soldiers As They Fell At The Battle Of Antietam; and No. 570/A Lone Grave On The Battle Field Of Antietam. A striking and truly important group that will live on as some of the only photographic representations of the bloodiest day in American history. Provenance: Descended in the family of Captain William W. Beckwith, 80th NY Condition: Light edge and corner wear, scattered minor speckling, else very good.
