Alfred Thompson Bricher (American, 1837-1908) Sailing off the Maine Coast Monogram signature "ATBRICHER:" l.l., a label from the Vose Galleries, Boston, on the backing. Oil on canvas, 12 x 20 in. (30.5 x 50.8 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, varnish inconsistencies, craquelure . Provenance: Purchased from Vose Galleries, Boston. N.B. Born in 1837, Alfred Thompson Bricher grew up in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He was largely self taught until 1851, when he enrolled in art lessons at the Lowell Institute in Boston. Bricher painted in both oil and watercolor. He began his career sketching and painting in the White Mountains and Maine. In 1868 the artist moved to New York, but summers found him on painting excursions along the Maine coast, on Cape Ann, as well as other coastal regions of Rhode Island and Long Island. Bricher was a member of the American Water Color Society and the Boston Art Club, and he was elected an Associate of the National Academy in 1879. His paintings were exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum, the National Academy, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and they are held in major museum collections. His work is associated with the second generation of Hudson River School painters and with Luminism.
