ALLESTREE, Richard (1619-1681). The Ladies Calling . Oxford: 1675. 8° (188 x 120mm). Engraved frontispiece and title vignette. With the final contents leaf. (Some dampstains, paper faults on A1r leading to loss of 5 letters in chapter title, the letters supplied in a contemporary hand.) LONDON BINDING OF CONTEMPORARY GILT-TOOLED BLACK TURKEY, the strawberry roll-tool border forming a large panel with a centre compartment of 'drawer-handles' and six lobed compartments at sides onlaid in red, the compartments all filled with four-petal pointillé flowers and two-leaf sprigs, the remaining ground tooled with spangles, tulips, daisy-like flowers, and seven-petal pointillé rosettes, the spine panels with floral onlay in red or blue (originally painted in silver but with the paint now flaked away, a few worm holes to upper cover, joints a little rubbed, one spine onlay lacking and others chipped). Provenance : Eliz. Potter (inscription on front blank); Lord Amherst (armorial bookplate); Maggs Catalogue 845, September 1957, no. 16 (attributed to Samuel Mearne price £35). Third edition. LONDON BINDING OF CONTEMPORARY GILT-TOOLED RED TURKEY PROBABLY BY THE QUEENS' BINDER B, the inner panel with an all-over pattern of 'drawer-handles,' rosettes, volutes, dots and spangles, the outer panel tooled with 'sweet sultans,' pointillé tulips, daisy-like flowers, leafy sprays and a small strawberry-plant, the spine compartments with repeated four-petal flower above a two-leaf sprig, gilt edges (chip near centre of upper cover and at board edge, slight stains and scuff marks, joints and spine bands rubbed). Provenance : Lyon family (various late 18th-century notations); Anna Bull (signature on title); 'Earl Beauchamp's copy with pedigree of the Lyon family ....' (bookseller's note). FIRST EDITION.
