ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) [LES FLEURS.] 1900. 19 3/8x25 3/8 inches, 49 1/4x64 3/4 cm. [F. Champenois, Paris.] Condition A- / B+: minor restoration in margins; tear at top edges. Matted and framed. Unexamined out of frame. The Flowers were first published in large sizes as individual images in 1898. Their subsequent success led Champenois to print them in a variety of different formats for eager collectors. Among these was this smaller format version, marketed towards those people who had less room in which to enjoy the images, with the four flowers on a single sheet. For the project, Mucha surrounded the images with an elaborate, decorative border, effectively turning them into a small screen. Rennert / Weill 49 (var 2), Lendl p. 202 & 203 (var), Mucha Grand Palais 84-87 (var), Darmstadt 82-85 (var), Mucha / Henderson 8, (var), Mucha / Bridges P13, Spirit of Art Nouveau 50 (var).
