Daily Bugle reporter Frederick Foswell was revealed as the criminal mastermind called the Big Man way back in ASM #10. After he served his time in the jug, J. Jonah Jameson gave the ex-con a second chance and re-hired him in ish #23. How did Steve Ditko feel about that? Was Foswell's rehabilitation his idea or Stan's? After all, Ditko's dogma held that "There is no such thing as a former criminal. Once you're a crook, you're always a crook" (see Duin & Richardson's Comics Between the Panels, Dark Horse: 1998, p. 134). Ditko's pessimism is justified by the revelation that Foswell has indeed returned to a life of crime. Perhaps Foswell's recidivism was Ditko's plan all along, and Stan was merely following through 14 issues after Ditko's departure. But Stan added a twist, redeeming the fallen Foswell, who mans-up and takes a bullet meant for JJJ: "Jameson gambled RIGHT.... He gave an ex-con a JOB... a second chance! And when the chips were down, Foswell REPAID the debt... the only way he could... with his LIFE!" There's also the possibility that Ditko's anti-redemption stance has been misrepresented. In an insightful online response to a 2021 Comics Journal article on Ditko, a reader named Laz observed: "There's a Mr. A story that's specifically about an ex-con trying to live a normal life after serving his sentence, and Mr. A is very sympathetic and even supportive of his effort. I think Ditko didn't believe in making what he saw as excuses for crime... but he did believe in second chances once the proportionate punishment for a crime was served." Enjoying the Spidey Sale?
