America.- New York.- Balch (Vistus, 1799-1884) A group of miniature views of New York buildings: Fulton Market, City Hall, Fort Gansevoort, Columbia College, St Pauls Church, Free School No.1, City Bank, Catholic Cathedral, City Hotel, St Johns Church, N.Y.Hospital, Alms House, State Prison, 13 etchings with engraving after Bridges, Burton Busby, Davis and others, the first two listed c.70 x 110 mm. (2 ¾ x 4 ¼ in.), remainder smaller, the majority printed on thin paper with wide margins (?proofs), a few light glue stains showing through from corners verso, loose, [not in Stokes & Haskell], Albany, New York, [c.1825-30]. (13) ⁂ Rare. The New York Public Library and the Metropolitan Museum have two examples each and the Museum of the City of New York has one. The only auction records traced are a smaller, mixed group lot in the William Loring Andrews sale of New York items in 1921 and the Neill Collection sale on New York in 1910 where they were described as "A particularly rare series of views" and offered as eight individual lots. Balch was apprenticed as an engraver to the Utica, N.Y. publisher William Williams and in about 1825 established Balch, Rowdon & Co. in Albany before moving to New York City c.1830.
