American, ca 1910, likely made by a sailor as an homage to the woman in his life; appears to be a shaving mirror with additions. Above the opening is a painted tablet having a seascape illustrating various ships afloat in a harbor; in the foreground is a lighthouse with an American flag flanked by two additional flags. Below the opening is a similar tablet illustrating a stylized river landscape. The perimeter of the frame is profusely decorated with progressively layered, chip-carved geometric shapes, applied carved symbols to include zodiac signs and moon phases; the frame opening is surrounded by an applied, carved roping. Vibrantly paint-decorated, each layer a different color; all exhibiting an untouched, alligatored surface. Mounted to a pivoting, adjustable stand supported by a marble base; image is 7" x 9"; frame overall 17" x 20". Condition: Very minor chipping to paint.
