An autograph literary album, apparently compiled by an English visitor, various places (New York, South Carolina, Cambridge, etc.) various dates [most 1850]. 4 o (10¼ x 8 in.), 252 x 202mm. 52pp., with papers of several colors (cream, tan, blue, lavender etc.), some contributions tipped in on separate sheets, most entries on rectos only, most noting place and date. Contemporary forest green roan gilt, spine gilt-lettered "U.S.A. 1850," all edges gilt. An album compiled in 1850--the beginning of a remarkable literary decade--containing contributions (in some cases quite extensive) from 26 American literary figures--poets, essayists, travel writers, publishers, journalists, historians and one eminent Senator (Charles Sumner). Highlights include Emerson, Whittier, Cooper, Irving, Bancroft, Everett, Bryant, Tuckerman.
