(American Manuscripts & Autographs) 1 Piece. Autograph Letter Signed [Younger, Thomas Coleman.] Younger, Cole. Stillwater [State Prison], Minnesota, July 31, 1896. 2 p., folio; toned, some dampstaining at right edge, expert repairs along old folds. To Dr. G. A. Newman, Hospital Department State Prison, "Kind friend. As you are about to leave tomorrow I take the privilege of writing you this note... I can bear testimony to the fact [that] from the time you took charge of this Hospital... your ever[y] act has been out of kindness not only to me, but to all the sick that have come under your charge... Should you take the trip south... visit Mo & Texas... I hope you will meet with some of my friends... I will here give you... names... [enumerating numerous friends and relations]... And may the God of Love be with you is the wish of your true and greatful (sic) friend. Cole Younger." Despite toning and other condition issues given above, text and signature strong, dark, and completely legible. Housed in custom chemise of brown morocco and marbled boards. Thomas Cole Younger, 1844-1916, Western outlaw, member of the James-Younger Gang, imprisoned after the failed James-Younger Northfield, Minnesota bank robbery of September 7, 1876 [subsequenly much written about and depicted in several motion pictures]; during the Civil War, Cole Younger rode with Quantrill's pro-Confederate rangers [guerrilla fighters], participating in the attack on the town of Lawrence, Kansas during August of 1863.
