Charles Armand was a veteran French soldier when commissioned a Colonel in the Continental Army on 10 March 1777. He organized a small legion of Frenchmen and fought at Short Hills, Bradywine and Monmouth, and wintered at Valley Forge; his detachment was asssigned to the Pulaski Legion in February of 1780. He served under Gates at the humiliating Battle of Camden and was ultimately appointed a Brigadier General on 28 March 1783. Armand "was one of the few foreign officers who impressed Washington" (Bostner). Letters of this distinguished soldier are extremely rare.
